Make: Learn how to Crochet

How to crochet - I made these squares!

One of the things on my list of things to do before I turn 31 is to learn a new craft. I managed to do it.  I decided I wanted to learn how to crochet.

The lovely girls at Super+Super run some fabulous classes and do a LivingSocial deal every now and then of which I decided to take advantage of. Their classes are already excellent value for money, but as someone who is known as thrifty, I love a good deal and had to take advantage of it. NB Lots of people would say that if I’m thrifty why wouldn’t I just teach myself using videos and other tutorials online – well, for a leftie with a few dexterity issues having someone show me exactly how to do it and help me is a much better way of learning than getting constantly frustrated with myself, which I’d done on many occasions where I tried to teach myself and failed!

Crochet classes at Super+Super Brighton, how I learnt how to crochet

The Learn to Crochet introduction class was great fun. As with all classes at Super+Super the tutors are well-schooled in their craft and are very hands on with each and every student. I love the fact that if you get stuck, you soon enough won’t be and your anxieties will be put to rest. Plus of course there is always lots of tea and some yummy baked treats to go along with the chatter you create with all of the other keen crafters.

Progress on the crochet front

We learnt some stitches, which for the life of me I cannot remember the names of, but I made some progress on the night and then continued to keep up the good work. I may even attempt to teach myself another stitch or two, attend one of the further crochet classes, or buy myself an issue of Simply Crochet – get me!

So those of you trying to learn a new craft – don’t give up! Attend a class or get someone you know to help you (only if they are good at it, naturally!) and before you know it you may have something akin to the small stack of crochet squares that I have beside me.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I learnt how to crochet.
