From many of my recent posts, you might think that I am trying to turn this into a food blog – I’m not. Or at least, I’m not intending to. However, I do love to eat good food, cook and bake, so if there’s something food wise that I’d like to share, then, well, I’m going to be honest I shall be sharing it!
Over the next day or so I’ll be sharing a selection of recipes which tie in with a competition that British Turkey are running – they are my entries into the competition which challenged entrants to come up with some exciting dishes which involved British turkey.
Today I am sharing with you two recipes to help you create a Chinese-inspired meal using British turkey.
Asian Inspired Turkey Recipes
Salt and Pepper Turkey
- 400g British turkey thigh, cut into pieces no longer than 2″ and no thicker than half an inch
- 4 tablespoons cornflour
- 4 tablespoons plain flour
- about 100ml sparkling mineral water
- vegetable oil for deep-frying
- 1-2 red chillis, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, sliced
- 1″ ginger, chopped
- 1 green pepper, halved and thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, halved and sliced
- 1-2 teaspoons sea salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- freshly ground black pepper
- 2 spring onions, finely sliced
- 1 tablespoon groundnut oil
1. First, cook the turkey. Mix the flours and water into a thick batter. Batter the pieces of turkey and deep fry them in vegetable oil until they are golden and the turkey is cooked. Set the drained cooked turkey on a baking tray and put into an oven at 100 degrees C to keep them warm and crisp.
2. Heat the groundnut oil in a wok until it is smoking. Add the chillis, garlic and ginger and stir fry for a few seconds. Then add the green pepper, onion, salt, pepper and sugar and stir fry them for a further minute or two.
3. Add the battered turkey pieces to the wok. Stir fry them until they are throughly coated in the onion and pepper mixture and are piping hot.
4. Add the sliced spring onions and serve at once.
Turkey Chow Mein
- 100g British turkey thigh, finely diced and marinaded for at least an hour in:
- 1 tablespoon rice wine
- half tablespoon light soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon five spice powder
- 250g egg noodles, cooked
- 200g beansprouts
- 4 spring onions, finely sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1″ piece of ginger, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon groundnut oil
1. Heat the groundnut oil in a wok until it is smoking. Add the spring onions, garlic and ginger and stir fry for a few seconds.
2. Add the turkey and stir fry for 2 minutes until it is cooked through.
3. Add the beansprouts and stir fry for 2 minutes.
4. Add the noodles, sesame oil and soy sauce. Stir fry until everything is thoroughly mixed and piping hot.
You could serve the two together or on their own and they would be great with some stir fried vegetables!
