It’s that time of year where we indulge in snacks and delicious party foods. But being a vegan and attending these parties can often be a bit of a minefield, with most of the usual treats not suitable for vegans or those with dairy and egg intolerances and allergies. Here are some ideas on what you can eat, and a recipe for a delicious vegan snack to enjoy at home or take to parties.
Vegan Party and Buffet Food Guide
Apart from the old crudites and hummus, there’s lots of delicious things that vegans can enjoy on the savoury side of party food. Here are a few ideas:
Onion bhajis (watch out, some supermarkets put milk and eggs in theirs!)
Tortilla chips and guacamole (if you’re buying, rather than making your guac, make sure to check for milk, as those sneaky supermarkets like to pop that in there!)
Buffalo cauliflower (I love Lauren Toyota’s Hot for Food buffalo cauliflower recipe!)
Onion rings (home made beer/sparkling water tempura onion rings are the best!)
Roasted cauliflower bites
There are loads of recipes for savoury vegan snacks online – it’s worth having a play around in the kitchen to see if you can veganise your favourite pre-vegan recipes, it’s usually really simple to do! And don’t forget to give my savoury rolls recipe (below) a go!
It’s pretty easy to serve up premade vegan friendly sweet treats, such as Party Rings, pink wafers and Oreos, but sometimes you want something a little more special! How about…

If you fancy cooking something that’s not too difficult to make and doesn’t take a long time, why not give my vegan savoury rolls recipe a go? They are the perfect vegan replacement for sausage rolls, and unlike shop bought vegan sausage rolls, can be filled with lots of tasty vegetables.
Vegan Savoury Rolls Recipe
These savoury rolls are a delicious party snack, but can also be packed into lunch boxes. They are a great way to use up leftover vegetables -whether they are pre-cooked or raw.
1 packet of vegan friendly stuffing mix (I like Paxo sage and onion stuffing*)
Your choice of vegetables (I used diced potatoes, brussels sprouts, mushrooms and parsnips)
1 tsp fennel seeds
Mixed herbs to taste
1 square of Jus Rol puff pastry*
Plant milk of your choice
Preheat oven to 180 Celsius (356 Fahrenheit, gas mark 4)
Make up stuffing as per recipe and put to the side.
Saute vegetables in olive oil with the fennel seeds (add these to the oil before the vegetables) and mixed herbs until the vegetables are part-cooked – they will finish in the oven. If you are using leftover vegetables that are already cooked, you can still saute your veggies with the fennel and herbs, just not for as long.
Roll out pastry if it’s not already rolled out (if you are using frozen pastry you’ll need to make sure that it is fully thawed before starting!)
Mix together the stuffing mix with the vegetables.
Place a strip of the vegetable stuffing mix along the pastry and roll once, pinching the ends of the pastry once you’ve cut off the excess. Cut into smaller pieces and place fold down onto lined baking tray. Repeat.
Once all pieces are in the baking tray, use a pastry brush to lightly glaze the top of each roll with the plant milk of your choice.
Cook in oven for 15-20 minutes, or until tops are light golden brown.
