How to Make Homemade Corn Tortillas

I am crazy about Mexican food. If I could eat one type of food for the rest of my life, it would be Mexican food. It is so delicious, plus I am pretty good at making it if I do say so myself!

Like I’ve said before, I try and eat as much food from scratch as I can, which includes bread, cakes, snacks and things like that. So I picked up a bag of masa and decided to give making homemade corn tortillas a go…..

Home Made Corn Tortillas Recipe

These are so simple to make – and much cheaper than shop bought tortillas!

The ingredients are simple – masa flour and water, and some salt if you wish.

The masa harina usually comes with instructions to make up the dough, but you basically mix the masa with water (adding the water in stages, bit by bit) until there is a sticky dough – be careful with the masa and your hands though, I would use plastic gloves as it is a different texture to wheat flour and can irritate the skin on your hands. Once you’ve made the dough, split it into golf sized balls and place each ball between two sheets of cling film. Roll them out with a rolling pin to approx 1mm in thickness and then pop into a hot, dry frying pan until cooked.


Once you’ve made your tortillas you could pop them in the freezer and defrost them when you need them… I must warn you that the smell of them when you cook them is so good!! And remember, these are gluten free too!

I cut a couple that I made up and baked them in the oven, ending up with crispy tortilla chips!  They were delicious with home made salsa…. yum!!

You can get 1kg of good Masa Harina from Casa Mexico for £2.95 – I’ve not tried the brand they sell, I picked mine up in the ‘gourmet’ section of Sainsburys. If you want to invest in a tortilla press there are some great ones between £30 and £50 a pop online.

  1. I haven't; but I want to now! You're very inspiring with your from-scratch approach. We do everything but the carbs ourselves (with the exception of cakes and biscuits) apart from a few failed attempts at baking bread and making pasta. These look so easy though- I really need to try them!! xx
